Adding and Editing Links and Anchors

The Content Editor includes tools for adding links, removing links, and creating anchors within a page. Use links to connect visitors to related pages, external websites, email addresses, phone numbers, downloadable files, or a specific section of the current page.

Tool Button Use
Link Link icon Creates or edits a hyperlink for selected text.
Unlink Unlink icon Removes a hyperlink while keeping the text.
Anchor Anchor icon Creates a named location within the current page.

Adding a Link

To add a link, highlight the text that should become clickable, then click the Link icon in the toolbar.

The Link dialog includes several link types:

  • URL: links to a web page or file.
  • E-mail: creates an email link.
  • Anchor in this page: links to an anchor already created in the current content.
  • Phone: creates a phone link for supported devices.

Use clear, descriptive link text. Avoid vague link text such as "click here."

URL Links

Use URL when linking to a page, website, or file.

Choose the correct protocol, such as https://, then enter the destination address. You can also use Browse Server to select a file from the server.

For most external websites, use a full https:// address.

Email and Phone Links

Use E-mail to create a link that opens the visitor's default email application. Enter the recipient email address and, when helpful, a default subject or message body.

Use Phone to create a link that starts a call on supported devices. Enter the full phone number.

Link Targets

Use the Target tab to control how the link opens. Common target options include:

  • Not set: uses the site's default behavior.
  • New Window (_blank): opens the link in a new browser tab or window.
  • Same Window (_self): opens the link in the current window.
  • Parent Window (_parent): opens the link in the parent frame.
  • Top Window (_top): opens the link in the topmost window.

Use new windows intentionally, especially for external websites or documents that should not interrupt the current workflow.

Uploading a Linked File

Use the Upload tab to upload a file and link directly to it. Choose the file, then click Send it to the Server. After the upload completes, the link points to the uploaded file.

Editing and Removing Links

To edit an existing link, click inside the linked text and reopen the Link dialog. The current link settings are populated so you can update them.

To remove a link while keeping the text, click inside the linked text and click Unlink.

Creating Anchors

Anchors create named locations within the current page. They are useful for long-form pages, FAQs, and table-of-contents style navigation.

Place the cursor where the anchor should be inserted, then click the Anchor icon. Enter a unique Anchor Name and click OK.

Anchor names should not contain spaces. Use letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores.

After anchors exist in the page, they become available in the Link dialog under Anchor in this page.
